Elbow Grease

An electrically actuated orthosis device meant for individuals with extreme neuromuscular weakness.

An assistive device for the arm that incorporates rubber bands to initiate elbow flexion

Project Description:

Ambulatory adults with neuromuscular disorders have difficulties performing activities of daily living (ADL) and maintaining their independence due to muscle weakness in their upper extremities. While many devices exist for assisting patients with orthopedic ailments of the upper extremity in their rehabilitation, a scarcity of orthoses are found on the market for assisting non-orthopedically impacted patients with ADL.
In order to supplement this specific group of users, the Elbow Greaser device was created to initiate enough movement so that users can go about their daily tasks. This device features a toque-activated mechanism that is powered by rubber bands to create a moment that allows for elbow flexion and extension. The Elbow Greaser also comprises a forearm cuff and a bicep cuff–which are connected to each other through a hinge–along with a sliding track that runs along the forearm and serves as a point of contact for the rubber bands.
