The Ruminators

A Biofeedback Device for Thoracoabdominal Dyssynchrony

Our prototype with EMG electrode connections and displacement sensor.

We have designed a user-friendly, cost-effective solution for patients who have difficulty complying with a diaphragmatic breathing routine. This is especially relevant to patients with GERD, rumination syndrome, functional dyspepsia, and other mid- to upper-GI disorders, as diaphragmatic breathing (DB) has been shown to alleviate symptoms of these conditions by depressurizing the abdomen. Patients often find it difficult to correctly perform DB, and the gold standard for measuring this is invasive and only done in the clinic. Our device provides a way for patients to take control of their DB practice in an outpatient setting and improve their symptoms.
