H.9 Improving the ostomy patient experience

S25, S25 Mechanical · January 3, 2025

IP Requirement: Medical University of South Carolina IP

Experience Requirement:

– Mechanical Design

– Rapid Prototyping

Problem Description

Poor patient experience in ostomy patient is driven by skin irritation and leakage both during normal activity and especially during changing the ostomy appliance.  As a nurse Jordan Miller dealt with this issue repeatedly.  This common surgical procedure has seemingly resulted in increasing issues as the population ages and the incidence of obesity increases.  She developed a possible solution for this issue that resulted in a patent.  There are many other aspects of ostomies that prevents patients from participating in society due to the constant fear of leakage.
