H.12 An instant molding system for the pediatric size and facial contour to well fitted for non-invasive ventilator mask

Problem Description

For the past 20 years in pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), we replaced the significant number of critically ill children with respiratory failure or impending respiratory failure using non-invasive ventilation (NIV) such as C-PAP (continuous positive airway pressure) and/or BiPAP (Bilevel positive airway pressure), avoiding “invasive” airway management with intubation. This mode of ventilation can address both ventilator failure (carbon dioxide accumulation) and oxygenation failure (lowering oxygen level). There are several companies make pediatric size, however, there are lacking of manufacturing masks for age gap between 5-12 years old. On daily bases, respiratory therapists explore several masks/nasal pillow types to accommodate most comfortable, decent fit without air/pressure leakage to support these children in respiratory failure. However, sometimes we need to “sedate” to make children comfortable to minimize “fighting against” mask/pressures to overcome the acute respiratory deterioration. The main reason is non of the masks on market fit these age groups with their face size/facial contour.
I am proposing a quick, cheap and comfortable facial molding application on these masks, so each patients will have
1) a comfortably fit and custom made mask
2) minimize air leakage, so reducing the side effect of being on NIV, thus we can initiate feeding as quickly as possible
3) minimize sedative use
4) minimize pressure ulcers from BiPAP/CPAP masks
