PresSure

Home breast-monitoring device using pressure patterns to detect tissue changes over time

Prototype version of the PresSure handheld breast monitoring device.

Project Description:

PresSure is a low-cost, handheld breast health monitoring device designed to assist women, especially those at elevated risk due to dense breast tissue, genetic predisposition, or limited access to routine screening, in identifying early changes in breast tissue stiffness. While clinical imaging remains the gold standard for breast cancer detection, many high-risk individuals experience long intervals between visits, inconsistent self-exams, or difficulty recognizing subtle lumps. PresSure aims to bridge this gap by providing a guided, at-home monitoring workflow that complements, not replaces, professional care. The device integrates controlled compression with a calibrated force-sensing module to capture localized tissue resistance across the four anatomical quadrants of the breast. A connected UI walks users through a step-by-step process: placing the device on each quadrant, achieving a standardized baseline pressure, applying a brief compression pulse, and recording stiffness signatures. This structured method reduces variability common in manual self-exams and supports more consistent longitudinal tracking. Data collected during screenings are automatically logged, processed, and displayed as an intuitive heatmap that highlights relative differences in tissue stiffness. Areas that deviate from the user’s baseline pattern are flagged as potential areas of interest, prompting users to consult their healthcare provider for further evaluation. PresSure is engineered as an awareness and wellness tool, not a diagnostic device. Its goal is to increase screening consistency, support earlier conversations with clinicians, and empower users with clearer insight into their own breast health. By combining guided workflow, real-time sensing, and interpretable outputs, PresSure addresses persistent gaps in self-examination practices and offers a scalable, accessible approach to breast health monitoring.
