H.30 Alert Staff Noise in NICU

Problem Description

We have had a problem with noise in our NICU for some time now. We have educated the staff on the detriment sound is to our NICU babies, but been unsuccessful in maintaining a quite environment consistently. We have an open bay unit and noise is mostly generated from loud monitor alarms, staff, parents, and phones. Historically stoplights have been used to let staff know it’s to loud, but soon these interventions don’t work and staff resents being treated like a child. We would love a fresh perspective on how bad the problem is, how to mitigate the impact on the baby and ways to let staff know when it is too loud in the NICU.
